Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Hywel Dda Book

The Institute builds on excellence in Arts and Humanities research at Aberystwyth and Bangor and will take a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the medieval and early modern periods. Lead by a Director of international standing, this crossdepartmental, cross-university research network will combine systematically, through clustered smaller research projects and larger collaborative activities, to create the capacity to address large research questions and modernise the working culture of established scholars, post-doctoral researchers and post-graduate research students. A number of multidisciplinary teams have been created focused on topics such as: Women and the Sacred, Cultures of War, Cultures of Manuscript and Print, and Peripheral Cultures.

Strategic Objectives

  1. To create an innovative research network to transform the research process

  2. To create multidisciplinary research teams to address novel research questions

  3. To develop an international network of researchers and other interested parties to inform and underpin this research programme

  4. To develop a robust knowledge exchange programme to ensure the effective flow of knowledge between the research base, the economy and society
